Like all buzzwords, no one really knows exactly what it means, but let me venture a broad definition: a smart city is a city that strives to reinvent itself using technology to improve its efficiency, enhance the service it offers to citizens and visitors and adopt a more sustainable model.

Earlier this year, I gave one of the biggest keynotes of my career at OFC/NFOEC. The focus was whether or not the optical networking industry has lost its mojo. At the time, I didn't realize how many conversations this topic would start. Since then, thousands of people have watched the video of my keynote and reviewed the supporting slides. What's more, people continue to start discussions with me on this topic.

Over the past few weeks I've found myself re-engaging with TV. This isn’t because the programming has suddenly improved or because I’ve started subscribing to ESPN. It’s largely because of Zeebox. This is an iPad app that adds social integration to the viewing experience. Basically it’s a TV guide where you select a programme and see conversations around this programme from your Twitter and Facebook communities.
