I know, the title sounds grandiose, doesn’t it? ‘My Life without Wi-Fi,’ and I also know it’s a first world problem, but I wanted to undertake an experiment of sorts. I wondered if I could survive at least three consecutive days without Wi-Fi – to be honest I had initially pondered a week’s withdrawal, but felt that such masochistic torture wasn’t necessary.

A couple of months ago a screenshot of the control panel of Doc Brown’s Delorean time machine in Back to the Future II circulated on the internet with the date of the day. Turns out it was a hoax, and a recurring one for that matter because the real date that Marty and Doc fly out to in that movie is October 21st, 2015.

My four-year-old son arrived home from school yesterday and asked me if he could do some homework before dinner. While I struggled to reclaim my breath, he swept my iPad and stylus from my desk and opened up the Paper app. He told me he had to draw a picture of Father Christmas for a group project and would need to use my printer a little later. I have to confess that this isn't a rare occurrence. Even my 9-month-old daughter is starting to use basic apps on my iPhone.

Whenever I travel, my iPhone becomes my communication workhorse: My go to device for talking to customers, to team members, to friends, to family. However, there's a definite shift taking place in how I use this device. I've just returned from two weeks in Munich and checked my usage. While away, I used only 17 minutes of traditional voice calls. However, on the data side of the house, the figures were a little higher. I racked up 200 megs of data roaming. O2, you're welcome. And my data usage was drastically higher over WiFi.
